Amazon Web Services Looks to Transform Space Industry With Generative AI
Amazon Web Services is investing in generative artificial intelligence to expand its cloud infrastructure business and transform the space sector.
According to Clint Crosier, AWS’ director of aerospace and satellite, advancements in mathematics, data proliferation and more affordable processing chips, are driving the adoption of cloud-based generative AI applications, SpaceNews reported.
To capitalize on the trend, Crosier said AWS has reorganized internally and established a dedicated “generative AI for space” team to collaborate with clients on developing next-generation space technologies and a generative AI lab where clients can experiment with new capabilities.
Crosier, a 4×24 member and a past Potomac Officers Club event speaker, also identified three primary applications of generative AI in the space industry: geospatial analytics, spacecraft design and constellation management.
He added that generative AI can assist space companies in managing increasingly congested orbits by simulating various test scenarios.
Earth observation satellite companies such as BlackSky and Capella Space are already using generative AI tools to manage geospatial data searches and gain deeper insights.
Crosier noted that AWS anticipates significant growth in the use of generative AI among its space and aerospace clients in the next few years.
