About Ann Dunkin
Ann Dunkin assumed the role of CIO at the Department of Energy in May 2021. Her prime responsibilities are managing the agency’s information technology portfolio and overseeing its cybersecurity and technology innovation efforts.
Among Ms. Dunkin’s strengths is leading teams to solve complex problems, enabling agency-wide collaboration, and delivering cutting-edge solutions on tight schedules and limited budgets. These capabilities poised Ann Dunkin to take the reins as the DOE’s CIO.
Outside of her executive role, Ann Dunkin is a published author; her most recent book is titled Industrial Digital Transformation. She has also been invited to speak on digital transformation, organizational development, and government technology modernization at different summits and conferences.
Given her leadership and career contributions, Ms. Dunkin has bagged several prestigious awards, such as being named one of ComputerWorld’s Premier 100 Technology Leaders for 2016, DC’s Top 50 Women in Technology for 2015 and 2016, and StateScoop’s Top 50 Women in Technology list for 2017.
Ann Dunkin completed both her Bachelor of Industrial Engineering and Master of Science degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a licensed professional engineer in California and Washington.Â

Prior to becoming CIO of the US Department of Energy, Ann Dunkin took on roles in private and public sectors. Her previous positions enriched her professional portfolio, honing her to be competent and deft in her current capacity.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Dunkin worked at Hewlett-Packard (HP) for over ten years. She took on various managerial and directorship roles where sje applied her engineering skills and developed the know-how on IT innovation and digital revolution.
Ann Dunkin’s work at HP prepared her to take on more senior roles specializing in technology. She served as Chief Technology Officer at the Palo Alto Unified School District and Dell Technologies.
Moreover, Ms Dunkin held CIO roles at other agencies, such as the County of Santa Clara and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). She was also a member of the Agency Review Team of the Biden-Harris Transition Team and a member of the Board of Directors at OptimEyes AI.

In a Fed Gov Today interview on January 23, 2024, Ms. Dunkin highlighted that one of the DoE’s goals is to ensure its employees utilize AI and machine learning technologies to improve their work processes without compromising safety.
The DoE Chief Information Officer also talked about the agency’s adoption of the Discovery Zone, an AI Sandbox designed to educate staff on the best and most responsible use of AI tools and capabilities.Â
The Discovery Zone is paramount to uniting all staff under coordinating plans for leveraging and responding to upcoming technologies in the government’s ongoing modernization processes.
