Get to know Karen Howard of IRS

Karen S. Howard joined the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Head of Office of Online Services in 2020 as the Executive Director. Ms. Howard has over four decades of expertise in content management, marketing leadership, and manufacturing and financial services for consumer-direct operations.

At IRS, Ms. Howard guides and oversees a team of 200+ professionals in transforming user experience based on taxpayer feedback and stakeholder needs. With this duty comes the opportunity to streamline paying taxes by providing taxpayers with digital tools, processes, and services through IRS.gov.

Among Ms. Howard’s many credentials and certifications include project management, product management, master data management, and human-computer interaction (HCI). Karen graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Carolina University.

Leadership History

Before joining the IRS, Karen Howard held several leadership positions. It includes her over six years executive position at Tractor Supply Company. She helped the company with its overall business operations for e-commerce and optimized operations for internet expansion.

Ms. Howard also worked with Renfro Corporation as Director. She supported the firm’s strategic team for digital transformation. After working with Renfro, she became the VP for Digital Strategy and Operations at LPL Financial.
