Canada Seeks Increased Cooperation With Five Eyes on Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Computing

Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said on Monday that her country has managed to maintain strong ties with its Five Eyes allies including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, and is interested in increasing cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum computing and other advanced technologies. But while Canada has expressed its intention to work with close allies in the development of defense technologies and information sharing, The Globe and Mail reported that the country seeks to join only the non-nuclear components of AUKUS, a trilateral security pact involving Australia, the U.S. and the U.K., U.S. News reported.

The 2021 AUKUS pact, which left out Canada and New Zealand, was criticized by China and France for being deceptive and used to go bypass the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, The Guardian reported. The security pact will provide Australia with nuclear-power submarine technology and capabilities as a response to the increasing threat from China.
