CDAO Head Discusses Responsible AI Adoption With Foreign Counterparts

Chief Digital and AI Officer Craig Martell and his office’s international affairs team have discussed responsible AI deployment in defense applications and data management and analytics with government officials in Singapore, South Korea and Japan.

The talks were held during Martell’s visit to the countries between Aug. 20 and 25, following a summit at Camp David, where U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese and South Korean leaders agreed to collaborate on missile defense and military technology development, DefenseScoop reported.

In an email, a CDAO spokesperson said topics during Martell’s meetings with his counterparts also included ways to strengthen ties and collaboration bilaterally and multilaterally. However, no agreements were signed and no next steps were confirmed between international partners.

In August, the Department of Defense announced the creation of a new CDAO-led task force to ensure responsible AI adoption. Martell said at the time that the task force’s responsibilities also include determining how adversaries can employ the technology to disrupt U.S. AI-based solutions.

Martell is a 2023 Wash100 awardee.
