DOD Needs Industry Collaboration to Overcome 5G Integration Challenges, Axellio CEO Says

The challenges of 5G integration that the Department of Defense faces can be addressed through early collaboration with industry, Axellio CEO Scott Aken, a 4×24 member, said.

In an article on the website Military Embedded Systems, Aken noted that the early approach to link military and commercial stakeholders will “avoid proprietary ‘island’ solutions” that exclude the opportunity for a unifying network approach.

5G integration initiatives need cooperation in developing guidelines to ensure network visibility and security monitoring, Aken said in a column Military Embedded Systems published.

Aken pointed out that the DOD’s Joint All Domain Command and Control program underscores the need for unified 5G networks, with the increasing prominence of electronic warfare and multidomain operations. He suggested that the DOD should adopt automation and orchestration through machine learning-enabled solutions able to detect and respond to anomalies in real time.

Despite its many benefits, 5G technology brings significant security hurdles that require a thorough investigation, the Axellio CEO said. He reiterated the crucial role of collaboration between military and commercial stakeholders in developing strategies to mitigate the issues of the DOD’s shift to 5G.
