DOD to Release Gen AI Maturity Model to Gauge Utility
A Department of Defense official disclosed that the agency will release a maturity model for generative artificial intelligence.
In a hearing hosted by the House Armed Services Committee’s cyber, innovative technologies and information systems subcommittee, Craig Martell, the DOD’s outgoing chief data and AI officer, said that the agency is working to identify where and when generative AI can be useful to achieve mission success.
Introduced in August 2023, CDAO’s Task Force Lima assessed over 200 potential generative AI uses submitted by organizations under the department, mostly for back office use, Breaking Defense reported.
Bill Streilein, CDAO’s chief technology officer, said that while he expects that the first version of the maturity model will be available by the end of June, the department will continue working on improving it as technology improves.
In recent months, the Pentagon has been tinkering with how AI will be useful in various applications. In an Intel Public Sector Summit in November 2023, Margie Palmieri, deputy chief digital and AI office at CDAO, disclosed that AI-enabled tools are helping military personnel make data-driven decisions.
