General Dynamics Information Technology to Spend More on Digital Engineering

Amy Gilliland, president of General Dynamics Information Technology, has revealed that her company is increasing digital engineering spending in 2024 amid rising demand from the Department of Defense.

Digital engineering involves developing and testing a system using digital models to avoid physical infrastructure limitations, Breaking Defense reported Friday.

The DOD introduced a new policy in late 2023 to iteratively develop a digital engineering capability its components can use.

Earlier, U.S. Army Undersecretary Gabe Camarillo signed off on a strategy to convert manual processes to a digital environment and develop virtual prototypes before spending on physical ones.

A GDIT spokesperson told Breaking Defense that the company is incorporating model-based software solutions to augment engineering and design work on the Army’s XM30 Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle.

Gilliland, a 4×24 member and 2023 Wash100 winner, noted that the company is also providing digital engineering support to the U.S. Air Force.

Before the DOD’s recent focus on digital engineering, Gilliland shared last year that GDIT would prioritize investments in areas such as 5G, artificial intelligence and zero trust.
