Maxar Intelligence to Pursue Market Diversification Once Its New Satellites in Orbit, CEO Says

Dan Smoot, Maxar Intelligence’s new CEO, has disclosed that the company will explore market opportunities beyond its traditional geospatial imagery and focus on new data products, such as 3D mapping.

Smoot, a 4×24 member, told SpaceNews that the company will undertake the diversification initiatives once its WorldView Legion satellite constellation has been deployed. He added that Maxar will also look into expanding its services to international customers and seek additional partnerships with other satellite operators when Legion turns operational, SpaceNews reported Tuesday.

According to the Maxar CEO, the first two Legion satellites’ launch is “coming very soon,” with the spacecraft’s April launch window aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

With all six Legion satellites launched into orbit, Maxar will almost double its daily imaging capacity to over 5 million square kilometers, Smoot said. He added that the capacity boost will not only bring more imagery but also additional insights for better decision-making, opening opportunities for geospatial intelligence partnerships with other remote-sensing companies.

Maxar is seeking collaboration with other geospatial data providers after entering into a partnership agreement with Umbra in February 2023, Smoot also revealed.
