Mitre to Boost US Government’s AI Capabilities With New Sandbox

Mitre is building a new artificial intelligence platform called the Federal AI Sandbox, aimed at giving government agencies access to powerful computing resources to experiment with and develop next-generation AI applications.

The sandbox, powered by Nvidia’s DGX SuperPOD, features superior computing capabilities specifically tailored for AI and machine learning tasks, Mitre said.

With its increased computing power, the sandbox offers capabilities to train large language models, generative AI tools, multimodal perception systems and reinforcement learning decision aids.

Charles Clancy, MITRE’s senior vice president and chief technology officer, said the Federal AI Sandbox will help address the federal agencies’ insufficient resources for AI development and experimentation.

Meanwhile, Anthony Robbins, vice president of Nvidia’s public sector, a 4×24 member, 2024 Wash100 awardee and past Potomac Officers Club event speaker, emphasized the power of DGX SuperPod in significantly accelerating the U.S. government’s AI initiatives.

Moreover, Mitre said it will leverage the sandbox in supporting its collaboration with agencies in national security, health care, transportation and climate sectors.

The sandbox will be operational by year-end and accessible through existing contracts with Mitre’s federally-funded research centers.
