USTRANSCOM Official: IT Integration Issues Delaying Household Goods Logistics System Transition
Defense officials said IT integration issues are causing delays in the Department of Defense’s planned overhaul for the system used to move servicemen’s household goods.
Andy Dawson, director of the U.S. Transportation Command’s Defense Property Management Office, said the systems and the environment being developed are not being deployed into an existing architecture, making IT integration a complicated process.
The combatant command also found issues in integrating the government’s systems with new ones being developed by HomeSafe, the contractor for the USTRANSCOM’s potential $17.9 billion Global Household Goods contract, Federal News Network reported.
Under the GHG contract, HomeSafe will use its HomeSafe Connect IT system to manage interactions between the company, military logistics partners and servicemen. HomeSafe Connect will work with the DOD’s MilSafe system, which replaces the legacy Defense Personal Property System.
Despite setbacks on the GHG contract, USTRANSCOM made strides in improving its technology and cybersecurity capabilities.
In late March, Gen. Jacqueline Van Ovost, commander of USTRANSCOM, said the command will work with the U.S. Cyber Command to implement a zero trust cybersecurity model on classified networks. The implementation was completed in September 2022, according to Van Ovost.
In February, the combatant command announced plans to move its cloud applications to the U.S. Air Force’s Cloud One platform by the fiscal year 2023.
