Biden’s Internet for All-Backed ‘Middle Mile’ Project Begins in Nevada

An Enabling Middle Mile Broadband Infrastructure Program-funded project led by internet service provider Zayo Group broke ground in Reno, Nevada, on Monday, a step toward expanding the reach of high-speed internet connectivity in the state.

Alan Davidson, assistant secretary of Commerce for communications and information, said that the groundbreaking of the “middle mile” internet infrastructure ensures that existing subscribers in Nevada can experience increased internet speeds and lower the cost of installing broadband internet connections in unconnected homes.

Funded by a $24 million grant from the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the program is part of the Biden-Harris administration’s Internet for All initiative to invest over $980 million in establishing “middle mile” networks to provide internet connectivity in American homes, the NTIA said.

With the internet playing a significant role in delivering public services to Americans, the White House has been allocating funds to improve connectivity across the nation. In November, the Department of Veterans Affairs entered into a partnership with Verizon Public Sector to bring veterans in rural America online, providing ease of access to essential health services.
