Bipartisan House Task Force to Help Guide AI Development
The office of Rep. Ted Lieu has announced that House leaders established a task force to mitigate artificial intelligence’s potential national security risks while maintaining the United States’ leadership in the field.
Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries each assigned 12 lawmakers representing key committees of jurisdiction to the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, Lieu’s office said.
In a statement, Jeffries said Congress is responsible for facilitating AI breakthroughs and ensuring that citizens benefit equitably from such advancements.
Rep. Jay Obernolte will chair the new group, while Lieu will serve as co-chair. The task force is expected to produce a report containing guidelines, recommendations and policy proposals developed with input from committees of jurisdiction.
The group’s members include Reps. Anna Eshoo and Don Beyer, who worked together in late 2023 to introduce the AI Foundation Model Transparency Act, which would require businesses to provide information regarding the use of personal data and copyrighted material.
Meanwhile, Lieu and Beyer are part of a group of lawmakers behind a bill requiring federal agencies and contractors to adopt National Institute of Standards and Technology risk management guidelines for AI.
