CYBERCOM Commander: NSA Support Vital in Harnessing AI in Counter Cyberthreat Efforts

The National Security Agency’s Artificial Intelligence Security Center has been extending a significant amount of support to the U.S. Cyber Command in its use of artificial intelligence in counter-cyberattack initiatives, according to Air Force Gen. Timothy Haugh, commander of the CYBERCOM and director of the Central Security Service and the National Security Agency.

Speaking during a keynote at AFCEA International’s TechNet Cyber conference on Tuesday, Haugh, a 2024 Wash100 winner, said that the two organizations are focused on two areas: “cybersecurity for AI and AI for cybersecurity.” He described the initiative as the United States is making the most out of AI to counter foreign cyberthreats while exploring ways to use the emerging technology to improve cyber capabilities, Signal reported.

Established in 2023 to address threats targeting AI solutions deployed across the federal government, the AI Security Center has since specialized in addressing AI-enabled cyberattacks originating from foreign states.

Haugh also called on the military and defense industrial base to accelerate their adoption of AI and other emerging technologies as part of continuous innovation efforts amid increasing cases of cyberattacks.
