Defense Information Systems Agency to Field AI Concierge for Staff

Steve Wallace, chief technology officer and director of the Defense Information Systems Agency’s emerging technology directorate, has revealed plans to pilot a prototype digital concierge powered by artificial intelligence.

Speaking Thursday at an Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association-hosted panel, he explained that such a capability would involve using a large language model to answer DISA staff queries by processing a vendor database of controlled unclassified information, Breaking Defense reported Thursday.

Wallace told Breaking Defense after the panel that the AI concierge would facilitate knowledge sharing among users by enabling employees to ask questions about official documents.

He said the prototype is expected to be launched in June after security issues are resolved.

Wallace brought up the digital concierge concept at a DISA Forecast to Industry event in November 2023, explaining that LLMs could assist employees with “all aspects of their job,” including back office work and analysis.

At the same event, he shared that the DOD is already using AI and LLMs in parts of its cloud environment.
