Defense Science Board Commences 2024 Summer Study on Future Warfighting Tech

The Defense Science Board recently met with Pentagon officials to discuss national security issues as part of the Winter Quarterly Session.

The event, which ran from Feb. 6 to 8, marked the beginning of the 2024 Summer Study on Advanced Capabilities for Potential Future Conflict, the Pentagon said.

During the first day of the Winter Quarterly, DSB Chair Dr. Eric Evans shared that his organization completed 11 studies in the last 20 months. Rhe efforts covered Pentagon dependencies on critical infrastructure; position, navigation and timing; commercial space system access; and microelectronics, he added.

The second and third days of the event revolved around the 2024 Summer Study, which is focused on new technologies and approaches to deal with current and future threats.

Heidi Shyu, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering and the DSB’s sponsor, said quarterly sessions and summer studies facilitate collaboration and strategic planning to support national security.

Shyu, a 2024 Wash100 winner, previously formed a task force within the DSB to identify strategic defense options, including for undersea operations and to counter electronic warfare.
