DIU Receives Funding Boost, Plans to Help Pentagon Accelerate Commercial Capabilities Adoption
The Defense Innovation Unit aims to help the Department of Defense accelerate its adoption and deployment of commercial capabilities after receiving a significant funding boost from Congress.
DIU Director Doug Beck said that the agency is working double time to determine how and where to allocate the $983 million in funding set aside in the Fiscal 2024 Appropriations Act. However, Beck added that his team plans to focus on four areas: accelerating existing programs, launching new ones, supporting projects led by other DOD innovation organizations and addressing challenges faced by the commercial sector in working with the Pentagon, C4ISRNET reported.
President Joe Biden only signed the FY24 appropriations package on Saturday after months of prolonged budget deliberations in Congress.
The funding will allow the DIU to continue working on various initiatives that advance new technology development, including the Replicator program. According to DIU, the program aims to help the DOD create new state-of-the-art, all-domain, attritable autonomous systems.
