DOD Establishes Generative AI Task Force for Responsible AI Adoption
The Department of Defense has created a new task force in charge of harnessing the power of generative artificial intelligence while ensuring the adoption of the technology will not harm national security.
Task Force Lima will assess generative AI tools and address risks associated with them prior to employing the technologies across the DOD. The group will establish partnerships within the department, the intelligence community and other government agencies to help minimize risks, including those that may result from poorly managed training data, and AI tech redundancy.
The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office will lead the task force, the DOD said.
Navy Capt. Manuel Xavier Lugo, a member of the CDAO’s Algorithmic Warfare Directorate, was selected as the task force’s mission commander. Lugo said that while AI adoption can improve intelligence, operational planning and administrative and business processes, it should be implemented in a responsible manner.
Another task force responsibility is identifying the ways U.S. adversaries can use the technology to disrupt U.S. AI-based solutions, according to Craig Martell, the DOD’s chief digital and AI officer.
