EchoStar Subsidiary to Continue Providing Private 5G Networks to Two Military Bases

Hughes Network Systems will continue providing Open Radio Access Network Private 5G networks to two naval bases after securing an extension of its contract with the Department of Defense Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering’s FutureG Office.

The contract covers the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii and the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington State.

Initially launched in March 2023, Hughes, an EchoStar subsidiary and the prime contractor, has been leading the effort in providing standalone 5G networks, using ORAN infrastructure and engineering combined with the EchoStar 5G spectrum, EchoStar said.

Hughes Vice President and General Manager Rick Lober said the contract extension validates EchoStar’s ability to offer customizable solutions using the best technologies.

Commenting on the usefulness of the 5G networks, Rajeev Gopal, vice president for advanced programs at Hughes, said the networks at NASWI and Pearl Harbor-Hickam showcase the capability of 5G standalone ORAN networks to support automated base operations.

The contract extension comes after EchoStar completed its acquisition of Dish Network in January, expanding its terrestrial and non-terrestrial connectivity offerings.
