Energy Department Unveils Road Map for AI Program

The Department of Energy is set to coordinate its artificial intelligence advancement efforts with a new road map for its Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence for Science, Security and Technology program.

The road map will guide FASST’s initiatives, including developing a skilled AI workforce and strengthening national security, FedScoop reported.

Through the program, the DOE will also focus on creating datasets suitable for AI training, building AI computing resources, developing trustworthy AI models, exploring various AI applications and addressing energy challenges.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm emphasized the potential of AI for scientific breakthroughs and national security.

Granholm further highlighted the department’s 17 national laboratories and supercomputing infrastructure as key assets in establishing a national AI capability and driving future advancements.

Recent legislation introduced by Sens. Joe Manchin and Lisa Murkowski also seeks to authorize the FASST program.

Supporting the DOE’s role in promoting AI development, Manchin, chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, stressed the urgency for the United States to lead in AI innovation to maintain its competitive edge.
