FedRAMP Issues Framework for Priority GenAI Tool Approvals

The Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program office has released the final version of its new emerging technology prioritization framework to fast-track the certification approvals of generative artificial intelligence capabilities.

The coverage of the prioritization process, which takes effect Aug. 31, includes GenAI tools for code generation and debugging solutions using large language models. Associated application programming interfaces that run such functions are also covered under the prioritized authorization process, Federal News Network reported Thursday.

The FedRAMP office said the new authorization process ensures that the prioritized cloud services are reviewed first and that it expects initial prioritization of up to 12 AI-based solutions. It stressed that the prioritized AI tools will be reviewed under the same security standards applied to all other cloud services.

Prioritization requests are voluntary and open for submission twice a year, the FedRAMP office added. It will evaluate requests based on the qualifying criteria and demand benchmarks to meet the prioritization framework’s goal of ensuring federal agencies’ quick access to vital emerging technologies.

In addition, a pilot project is underway on secure software development related to a major revamp of the program’s authorization request process
