Industry Officials Call for AI Regulation Harmonization

The U.S. government must streamline artificial intelligence regulations, according to private sector executives.

Speaking before members of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Government Innovation on Thursday, John Miller, vice president of policy, trust, data and technology at the Information Technology Industry Council, said that while three administrations have promised the harmonization of AI regulations, there has been no concrete effort to eliminate duplicative regulation.

Experts who attended the hearing cited the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s incident reporting requirement as an example that best demonstrated the need for streamlining of policies, CyberScoop reported.

In the same event, Maggie O’Connell, director of security, reliability and resilience at the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, suggested that CISA should be the single entity to oversee cybersecurity regulations. Currently, federal agencies have overlapping jurisdiction over industries’ cybersecurity.  O’Connell cited the U.S. Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration’s shared oversight of the oil and natural gas industry as an example.

Days before the hearing, Sens. Gary Peters, D-Mich., and James Lankford, R-Okla., introduced a bill to address the growing burden associated with complying with cyber regulations.
