Kurt Vogel Assumes Leadership of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson has announced the appointment of Kurt Vogel as associate administrator of the Space Technology Mission Directorate, effective immediately.

Vogel will handle executive leadership, strategic planning and management of all space technology programs financed by the unit’s $1.2 billion budget, NASA said.

James Reuter, the previous STMD head, retired in 2023. Prasun Desai, who acted as associate administrator in the interim, is expected to return to his original deputy associate administrator role.

According to Nelson, Vogel will support the agency’s efforts to advance space technology and U.S. leadership in the domain.

Vogel joined NASA in 2021 as the director of space architectures within the Office of the Administrator.

He previously served in various leadership roles at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, overseeing classified programs and research on space control systems, air-space integration, electronic warfare and stealth.

Earlier, Vogel directed a Pentagon science and technology portfolio at the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Systems Technology Office.
