Leonardo DRS Awarded Navy Contract for Radar Development

The U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded Leonardo DRS a contract valued at over $26 million to provide design agent and engineering services for the AN/SPQ-9B radar system.

Leonardo DRS will deliver system engineering, software development, hardware design, installation, safety, testing, product updates, system upgrades and configuration management services for the radar system.

The AN/SPQ-9B is specifically designed for the littoral environment and offers high clutter improvement and low false track rates. The X-band radar system’s capabilities include simultaneous detection and tracking of various air and surface threats, such as low-flying anti-ship missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and helicopters, Leonardo said.

Cari Ossenfort, senior vice president and general manager of Leonardo DRS’ naval electronics unit, highlighted the company’s agility, engineering processes and experienced team, and emphasized its commitment to supporting the U.S. Navy’s air and surface threat detection program.
