Marine Corps Begins Deployment of Modernized DCGS-MC System
The Marine Corps Systems Command is deploying an improved version of an intelligence system that commanders rely on to stay informed of battlefield situations and threats.
Upgrades to the Distributed Common Ground/Surface System-Marine Corps include new computer hardware and software connected to the Marine Corps Enterprise Network. The modified DCGS-MC also comes with sensors and antennas for data gathering, a geographic intelligence capability that collects satellite imagery and workstations for analysts, Marines .mil reported.
According to Master Sgt. John Phillips, an MCSC representative who contributed to the DCGS-MC project, the new system will ultimately make Marines’ jobs easier.
“The new DCGS-MC capability is a modern approach for the Marine Corps to perform intelligence tasks,” Phillips added.
Col. Dave Burton, MCSC’s program manager for Intelligence Systems, also noted that the modernized system decreases the amount of hardware needed for use, resulting in reduced size, weight and modularity.
Burton said the improved DCGS-MC lightens the load of Marines as it allows for the combination of separate servers used for individual programs.
Intel Marines are the first recipients of the modernized system. Phillips estimates that the initial round of system deployment will be completed in July, with full deployment projected to conclude by the end of 2022.
The Marine Corps is pursuing its modernization priorities despite years of flat budgets.
Gen. David Berger, commandant of the Marine Corps, said the service has been able to pursue the transformation of its troops without asking for extra money from the White House or Congress in the last two years.
Modernization initiatives across the Marine Corps have remained on track owing to cost-saving compromises, including system divestitures and troop discharges, Berger said.
