NOAA Starts Logistics System Modernization, National Logistics Chief Says

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is performing an agency-wide upgrade on its logistics systems, covering software, business processes and the distribution network.

In an interview with Federal News Network’s Tom Temin, Douglas Templeton, chief of the National Logistic Support Center for NOAA and the National Weather Service, said the modernization came after the current systems were assessed as no longer capable of handling modern software language and operations.

He also discussed how the new logistics system will provide employees with a comprehensive view of the whole process and why no additional training is needed once the new logistics system rolls out, Federal News Network reported.

Besides the logistics modernization effort, the agency has also kicked off several upgrades in recent years. In September, it tapped Raytheon to modernize its water resource prediction capabilities, allowing it to provide better data for decision-making and mitigation of damage.

In 2022, NOAA issued a broad agency announcement seeking a vendor to help with its transition from hardware-based ground radio processing to cloud-based software applications.
