Navy CIO Says Infrastructure Modernization, Emerging Technology Key to Secure Edge Communications

Jane Rathbun, the Department of the Navy’s chief information officer, shared at a recent GovCIO Media & Research event that her organization is securing tactical edge communications by modernizing its infrastructure, training its workforce and utilizing emerging technology.

Rathbun, a 2024 Wash100 winner, said she wants to ensure that warfighters receive trustworthy and useful data to make decisions and act, GovCIO Media & Research reported Saturday.

Emerging technology could enable the delivery of prepared instead of simple data, potentially improving troops’ readiness to tackle the number of decisions to be made on the battlefield, she added.

Rathbun said she may opt to understand what kinds of decisions need to be made and guide such choices by training the Navy’s artificial intelligence and machine learning models to produce useful data.
