NIST Announces Collaboration Opportunity for Digital Identity Adoption Project

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is seeking organizations interested in supporting a National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence project that aims to accelerate the adoption of digital identities, including digital driver’s licenses.

NIST intends to partner with experts from industry, government and academia through an NCCoE cooperative research and development agreement, under which selected parties will provide technical expertise and products to support and demonstrate capabilities for the Accelerate Adoption of Digital Identities on Mobile Devices project, according to a notice posted on the Federal Register. The collaboration with selected organizations is expected to begin no earlier than Sept. 28.

The effort aims to identify effective technologies and approaches that would help secure digital identities and develop a reference architecture that would help mitigate potential privacy risks.

As part of the project, NIST plans to have demonstrations of end-to-end uses of a mobile driver’s license in attended and over-the-internet transactions.
