Northrop Grumman Next Generation Interceptor Completes Preliminary Design Review
Northrop Grumman has completed the All-Up Round Preliminary Design Review of the Next Generation Interceptor.
In a review led by the Missile Defense Agency, the NGI team carried out the demonstration by showcasing the solution’s full-scale solid rocket motor, avionics and other test hardware.
The company’s NGI solution is capable of defending the United States against intercontinental ballistic missile threats as part of the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system. After the PDR, the next step for the solution is the Critical Design Review, Northrop Grumman said.
NGI Program Vice President Lisa Brown said that with the project’s global significance, the company is ensuring the production and manufacturing readiness of the NGI solution.
The Department of Defense awarded the NGI contract, with an estimated maximum value of $1.6 billion, to Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin in March 2021.
The defense contractor previously worked with MDA on modernizing the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense Weapon Systems Program. Under the contract, the company will update and modernize the systems’ ground components to meet the needs of future missile threats.
