NRC Seeks Funding for AI-Related Research Initiatives in FY25

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is requesting an estimated $4.43 million to fund its artificial intelligence-related research initiatives in fiscal year 2025, according to Public Affairs Officer Dave McIntyre.

In an email to FedScoop, McIntyre said the agency is preparing to invest more in needed information technology infrastructure and attract new talent while upskilling its existing workforce.

According to a document justifying its FY25 budget proposal, the NRC will use the funds to support the development of an AI regulatory framework for the nuclear sector while ensuring the responsible adoption of the technology, FedScoop reported.

A different NRC spokesperson revealed the agency has been working on “some limited risk assessments” of generative AI and plans to continue working with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency on managing cyber risks.

The agency has been looking into the potential of AI and other emerging technologies to help improve the operations of nuclear facilities across the country. In February 2022, it released a sources-sought notice seeking information on vendors capable of helping develop AI- and machine learning-powered solutions to protect facilities from cyberattacks.
