ODNI Official Says Artificial Intelligence Policy in the Works

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence is working on governance to support responsible artificial intelligence use throughout the intelligence community.

Michaela Mesquite, acting chief of ODNI’s Augmenting Intelligence using Machines group, said the policy is meant to ensure transparency, DefenseScoop reported.

The governance is expected to build on an AI ethics framework she contributed to.

In a panel discussion at the Advantage Defense and Data Symposium on Thursday, she shared that the intent is to improve IC members’ understanding of what AI capabilities are appropriate for their jobs. Effective and appropriate uses are inherently ethical uses, Mesquite explained.

Mesquite said to expect “a lot more policy,” a new strategy and governance structures.

She told DefenseScoop after the panel that ODNI will first release a directive, but she declined to estimate when it would be completed.

According to Mesquite, AIM is responsible for providing expertise and ideas to ODNI policymakers.
