OSTP Publishes Five-Year Microelectronics Strategy

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has released a new strategy to guide how government agencies, academia, industry and international partners use CHIPS and Science Act funding over the next five years.

The National Strategy on Microelectronics Research outlines four goals designed to advance microelectronics research and development, boost domestic microelectronics manufacturing and position the United States as a leader in the semiconductor industry, the White House said.

According to the document, the first goal is focused on accelerating research advances for future generations of microelectronics. The OSTP encourages research on materials, tools and methods that can enable new capabilities for transitioning new innovations into production.

The second goal highlights the need to support, expand and connect the microelectronics research infrastructure to manufacturing capabilities for prototyping; large-scale fabrication; and advanced assembly, packaging and testing.

Developing the technical workforce through education and creating a vibrant microelectronics innovation ecosystem are the third and fourth goals, respectively.

According to the OSTP, implementing the strategy will accelerate research breakthroughs, transition new advances into commercial applications and provide good-paying jobs in the U.S.
