Pentagon Investing in Cloud Infrastructure to Ensure Competitive Edge

The Department of Defense has achieved significant progress with its Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability modernization effort, according to Chief Information Officer John Sherman.

Speaking before the House Armed Services Committee’s cyber, information technologies and innovation subcommittee on Friday, Sherman said the initiative is part of the department’s plan to ensure every worker has access to necessary secure and resilient software.

Chief Digital and AI Officer Craig Martell and Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert J. Skinner were present at the hearing, which also focused on adopting data analytics and AI and implementing a zero trust cybersecurity framework, the DOD said.

The Pentagon has been working to ensure it is taking advantage of what cloud computing has to offer. It issued a memo in December 2023 to accelerate the approval process observed when granting Federal Risk Authorization Management Program authorization.

In January, it released a memo clarifying which party is responsible for ensuring the security of cloud services at the FedRAMP moderate level.
