RTX Secures DARPA Contract to Advance AI-Generated Decisions
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has awarded RTX a contract to ensure that artificial intelligence-made decisions are in line with those made by humans in real-life situations.
Under the contract, RTX’s Raytheon BBN division will use a cognitive interviewing technique to understand how experts in the medical and emergency response fields evaluate information to make decisions. The results will be used to create AI algorithms that generate decisions akin to those made by humans.
Work will be performed in Massachusetts, Ohio and Alabama, RTX said Thursday.
The contract is part of DARPA’s “In The Moment” program, which brings together multiple teams to develop prototype AI decision-makers that provide insights in line with humans subject to difficult scenarios. The program also tests if experts would trust AI-generated decisions.
RTX’s BBN team has been supporting technology development across the military.
In January, the U.S. Air Force awarded Raytheon BBN a four-year, $8.7 million contract to develop a mission planning and command and control system that would facilitate rocket cargo mission launches. In August 2022, the RTX subsidiary was tasked to develop human-machine interfaces that would allow personnel to understand critical system processes, performance thresholds, operating contexts and mission goals.
