SSC Chief: Space Force Organizational Restructure to Improve Combat Readiness

Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant, head of Space Systems Command, has revealed the U.S. Space Force’s restructuring initiative aimed at improving combat readiness.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Mitchell Institute on Tuesday, Garrant said that the Integrated Mission Delta concept will revamp its missile warning and space domain awareness as two mission areas in the coming months, to be followed by satellite communications and orbital warfare.

In September, the Space Force introduced two prototype IMDs, including one for electronic warfare and another for positioning, navigation and timing capabilities, both designed to be under one command, Breaking Defense reported.

Eight Deltas made up the Space Operations Command’s organizational chart, including Delta 3 space electronic warfare and Delta 8 satellite communication and navigational warfare.

Besides testing the IMDs, the Space Force has also introduced a new “System Delta” concept. Gen. Chance Saltzman, chief of space operations and past Wash100 awardee, said that the System Deltas would complement IMDs as the organization restructures with a greater focus on functions rather than missions.
