GAO: Federal Agencies Need to Improve Information Sharing for Emerging Technology Regulations

The Government Accountability Office said federal agencies must document changes in emerging technology-related regulations and share relevant information with Congress and other relevant stakeholders to ensure effective regulatory implementation.

According to a GAO report, emerging technologies such as 3D printing and those powered by artificial intelligence require more legislative oversight and coordination with Congress. The GAO also pointed out that new technologies and challenges may surface amid legislators’ efforts to establish regulations for existing technologies, hence the need for a more collaborative approach from agencies.

The Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Transportation were selected to have their regulatory measures reviewed. The three agencies said they are currently working with their domestic and international counterparts to enhance their knowledge of emerging technologies.

The GAO offered three recommendations for regulatory information-sharing improvements, all of which the agencies concurred with, FedScoop reported.

Other government agencies have been looking to improve emerging technology management.

In December, the Department of Energy launched the Office of Critical and Emerging Technology, an office that would oversee investments in AI, semiconductors and other technologies. In January 2023, the Department of State operationalized the Office of the Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technology, which brings additional expertise and diplomatic leadership for critical technologies.
