ODNI Research Unit Launches New Initiative to Further Quantum Computing

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s research and development unit has introduced a new quantum computing program to address challenges faced in solving chemistry, physics and mathematical problems.

On Thursday, the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity launched the Entangled Logical Qubits, aiming to provide insights into quantum computing by exploring the complexities of the basic units of quantum information in the paradigm of universal fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Several organizations received ELQ research contracts through a broad agency announcement. Organizations that are part of the effort include ETH Zurich, Harvard University and the University of Sydney, ODNI said.

Michael Di Rosa, ELQ program manager, said that UFTQC presents an opportunity to address the errors associated with computing with physical qubits.

Besides quantum computing, IARPA is also engaged in discovering the potential of artificial intelligence. In June 2022, Director Catherine Marsh disclosed that the unit is working on several initiatives to use AI to improve public safety capabilities.
