ODNI Names John Beieler as Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer

John Beieler, science and technology director at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, has been appointed as the agency’s concurrent chief artificial intelligence officer. Beieler announced his appointment in a speech at an Intelligence and National Security Alliance event in Arlington, Virginia, on Thursday.

The additional ODNI role confers to Beieler the leadership in the council of chief AI officers from the Intelligence Community’s 18 units, including the CIA, the National Security Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency, Federal News Network reported.

The council, which reports directly to Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, is currently drafting the first IC-wide guidelines for AI and machine learning deployment, Beieler disclosed in his speech in the Arlington event. During the last two months, the council has been meeting every two weeks, with discussions focused on AI governance and as well as on an ODNI AI strategy update, he added.

Previous to his current ODNI tasks, Beieler worked as a program manager for the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, according to his LinkedIn profile.
