White House, Major Providers Commit to Securing Health Care Industry From AI-Related Risks

The Biden-Harris administration is working with health care organizations to secure the sector from the risks associated with artificial intelligence.

On Thursday, the White House, with the Department of Health and Human Services and leading players in the health care industry, expanded its initiative to protect the sector from AI-related risks. The businesses are committing to several initiatives, including creating a risk management framework for tracking AI-powered applications and developing AI solutions to optimize health care delivery and payment and promote health equity, HHS said.

Companies involved in the effort include Boston Children’s Hospital, CVS Health and UC San Diego Health.

With the growing use of AI, the federal government has been working to promote its responsible development and use. In October, President Joe Biden released an executive order focused on AI, calling for safe and secure AI development and rollout to build public trust in the emerging technology.

The Department of Commerce was among the first agencies to heed the administration’s call. Days after the release of the AI EO, the department prompted its components to review AI-related risks, and instructed the National Institute of Standards and Technology to craft an AI safety standard for the entire government.
