Upcoming CFTC Committee Meeting to Cover Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity

Christy Goldsmith Romero, head of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, has released the agenda for a Jan. 8 public meeting of the Technology Advisory Committee to discuss artificial intelligence, cybersecurity modernization and decentralized finance.

Romero, the TAC’s sponsor, wrote that AI has transformative potential if its implementation avoids harm to customers and markets, CFTC said Friday.

The event will begin with a presentation by Elizabeth Kelly, the White House National Economic Council’s special assistant to the president for economic policy, on President Joe Biden’s AI executive order.

Later, Mitch Herckis, branch director for federal cybersecurity at the Office of the Federal Chief Information Officer, is expected to speak on U.S. cybersecurity modernization efforts.

Michael Wellman, the University of Michigan’s Lynn A. Conway professor of computer science and engineering, is scheduled to discuss how AI could impact financial markets.

The TAC’s Subcommittee on Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology is expected to deliver the final presentation, which will cover a study on decentralized finance.

CFTC said it will make a live feed of the meeting available on its website and YouTube channel. The commission noted that it will accept comments on the meeting until Jan. 15.
