US Government to Accelerate Artificial Intelligence Executive Order Development
The Biden administration is speeding up efforts to create an executive order to guide federal agencies on how to use artificial intelligence responsibly and address risks posed by the technology.
Arati Prabhakar, director of the White House Office of Science Technology and Policy, said President Joe Biden has expressed concerns about AI security as generative AI tools have become widely available. According to Prabhakar, the EO development process for AI will be different to accommodate the seriousness of the matter and the technology’s value to federal agencies.
The director’s comments come amid lawmakers’ work on safe AI use, CyberScoop reported.
On Aug. 9, the White House announced a competition led by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to broaden AI use cases and identify and fix software vulnerabilities. Participants in the “AI Cyber Challenge” could win up to $18.5 million in prizes.
In late June, the National AI Advisory Committee submitted its first annual report to Biden, which acknowledges the benefits of generative AI and other AI technologies while highlighting associated risks. Earlier in the month, Congressional AI Caucus member Rep. Ted Lieu filed a bill to establish a blue-ribbon commission advising lawmakers on AI policies and helping organizations address AI risks.
