Space Force, EUCOM, AFRICOM Activate New Command Providing Space Capability Support

The U.S. Space Force, U.S. European Command and the U.S. Africa Command have activated a new service component designed to help develop and expand space capabilities.

US Space Forces Europe and Africa is a Space Force unit under EUCOM and AFRICOM responsible for satellite navigation, communications, integration with NATO allies and partners and other space-based capabilities. The component is also expected to build strategic relationships in the space domain while fostering regional stability across Europe and Africa.

USSPACEFOR-EURAF is headquartered at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, the U.S. Space Force said.

The military branch has been setting up units within combatant commands to improve space operations for the military.

In December 2022, the U.S. Central Command activated USSPACEFORCECENT, which oversees space operations over the combatant command’s area of responsibility and provides an organic environment for space activities and employment. In November 2022, the military branch established the U.S. Space Forces Indo-Pacific, a unit that supports the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command’s space-based requirements.

The Space Force and the U.S. Cyber Command are also setting up a similar component. A Space Force spokesperson said in August that both organizations have not yet confirmed a date for the anticipated unit’s activation.
