Wallaroo.AI to Support Integration of Machine Learning Into US Military Space Missions

AFWERX, the Department of the Air Force’s innovation arm, has awarded New York-based company Wallaroo .AI a Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer contract to help the department address key on-orbit challenges.

Under the STTR award, Wallaroo .AI will use its expertise in artificial intelligence to help the Air Force Research Laboratory deploy machine learning models at the edge with radiation-tolerant commercial off-the-shelf integrated circuits. Work under the contract is designed to integrate AI into space missions, including robotics, refueling and satellite protection.

Research efforts will be conducted in partnership with the New Mexico State University’s computer science department. The U.S. Space Force will be the primary beneficiary, Wallaroo .AI said Tuesday.

The Phase II STTR award adds to the company’s work on AI and ML capabilities designed to enhance processes and workflows.

In July, Wallaroo .AI partnered with Ampere Computing to create solutions to optimize cloud AI operations. Under the partnership, the companies will use their ML expertise to improve processes while reducing operating costs.

In June, Wallaroo .AI announced early access to ML workload orchestration functions in its unified ML platform. The solutions enable automation, scheduling and data/ML inferencing workflow execution.
