Office of National Cyber Director Drives Long-Term Space Cybersecurity Investments, Collaborations

The Office of the National Cyber Director is intensifying its focus on enhancing the cybersecurity of space systems with a particular emphasis on incentivizing long-term investments.

In a speech at the CyberSatGov conference on Monday, Nicholas Leiserson, assistant national cyber director for cyber policy and programs, outlined several key strategic shifts that will significantly impact space cybersecurity, ViaSatellite reported.

Among them are shifting the responsibility for cybersecurity to government and technology providers and pushing for long-term investments in cybersecurity. 

The goal is to reduce the government’s technical debt, the cost of maintaining outdated systems as opposed to investing in better solutions.

Earlier in 2023, the ONCD, which advises the U.S. president on cybersecurity policy development and implementation, helped shape President Joe Biden’s National Cybersecurity Strategy.

The ONCD acknowledged that a connected future, particularly in areas like clean energy, health care and the growing space economy, depends on fundamental shifts laid out in the strategy,
