DOD’s Task Force Lima to Issue Generative AI Testbed

Task Force Lima, a new unit handling the Department of Defense generative artificial intelligence adoption, is finalizing the release of a digital testbed for defense community trials and experiments on various AI solutions.

U.S. Navy Capt. Manuel Xavier Lugo, the task force commander, said during a recent Chief Digital and AI Office event that the digital generative AI sandbox is designed for access, orientation and metrics collection on the technology. Lugo added that testing and evaluation tools are for installation in the sandbox to enable assessments on generative AI’s limits and security features, GovCIO Media & Research reported Monday.

According to Joseph Larson III, CDAO’s deputy chief digital and AI officer and a past Potomac Officers Club speaker, Task Force Lima’s establishment followed concerns on generative AI’s misapplications on defense workflows, along with interest in the potential help that the technology can provide to the defense enterprise.

Lugo pointed out that the task force’s role is to recommend generative AI architecture positioning, with its focus visionary and experimental about the technology’s capability, but minus giving a specific result prediction.
