Senate Bill to Create AI Training Program for Federal Agency Leaders

Sen. Gary Peters has introduced a bill seeking the creation of an artificial intelligence training program for federal agency leaders. The Artificial Intelligence Leadership Training Act aims to improve the federal workforce’s skills in using AI systems and help government decision-makers better understand the capabilities, risks and ethical implications associated with AI, the office of Sen. Peters said.

According to the senator, the AI training will provide federal leaders with the expertise needed to ensure AI tools benefit the American people instead of causing potential harm, such as bias or discrimination. The legislation mandates the Office of Personnel Management director to develop and continuously update the training program.

Peters introduced the bill as the government speeds up the adoption of AI technologies which, he said, should be used responsibly and ethically. The Artificial Intelligence Leadership Training Act complements the AI Training Act, which Peters had written and became law in October 2022. The AI Training Act requires federal employees responsible for procuring AI technologies to undergo similar training.
