Col Daniel M. May serves as the Acting Air Force Intelligence Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the Air Force Intelligence Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) at Headquarters Air Force in the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Cyber Effects Operations. He is responsible for strategy, guidance, and oversight of Air Force intelligence programs, initiatives, and partnerships leveraging artificial intelligence techniques. Col May represents the Air Force in the NGA Geospatial Data and AI Subcommittee and the Intelligence Community CAIO Council. Additionally, Col May serves as the individual mobilization augmentee to the National Air and Space Intelligence Center Global Exploitation Group Commander. In this role he commands over 600 military and civilian personnel collecting, exploiting & analyzing air, space, and cyber intelligence with a $35M annual budget and worldwide footprint.
Prior to his current assignment, Col May was the Chief of Global ISR Functional Integration in Air Force Futures at the Pentagon. He engaged Air Force, joint, intelligence community, and interagency stakeholders to modernize Air Force intelligence capabilities.
Col May was commissioned in 2005 after graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy. After completing an advanced degree at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy and intelligence school, he was assigned to 13th Air Force, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. He served as Chief of Exercise Support, Plans, and Resources, directly supporting tsunami relief efforts during Operation TOMODACHI and squadron intelligence augmentation to close air support operations for Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. After moving to Northern Virginia, Col May joined the Joint Staff Directorate for Intelligence as an exercise planner and Reserve Director of Operations. He then served as the Deputy Director of Intelligence Innovation Programs for Headquarters Air Force, leading teams to develop and rapidly field innovative intelligence capabilities to support the warfighter, and as a Program Manager for a joint intelligence program at the Defense Intelligence Agency.
