Nick Hasko has served on the AUKUS Team as the de facto deputy and Advisor covering Pillar II and cross-cutting issues since December 2023. Prior to this, he was a Special Assistant to Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie D. Jenkins. He covered regional issues, counter-disinformation efforts, strategic engagement with Africa, and the AUKUS security partnership. His policy work on AUKUS played a key role in the Secretary of State asking Under Secretary Jenkins to lead the Department’s implementation of AUKUS.
Prior to this assignment, Nick was U.S. Mission Somalia’s Political Officer. Before this, he obtained an Executive Master in Public Administration degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. His research there focused on issues of organizational cultural and human capital development in the State Department and peer institutions. Prior to that, he served as a Program Officer in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs covering rule of law programs in Afghanistan, Political-Military Officer in the Office of Russian Affairs, Political-Military Officer in Kabul, Staff Assistant in Kabul, and Immigrant Visa Chief (Iranian Operations) in Ankara.
Before entering the Foreign Service, he earned a BA degree in international economics with a concentration in political economy from Franklin College Switzerland. He has various levels of proficiency in Spanish, Russian, Farsi, Dari, French, and Somali.
