Dr. Peter Schemmel is the Deputy Chief of the Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program office at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The SCaN program aims to build and maintain a scalable integrated mission support infrastructure that can readily evolve to accommodate new and changing technologies, while providing comprehensive, robust, and cost-effective space communications services to enable NASA's space missions. Dr. Schemmel also serves at the Project Manager for the Communications Services Project, enabling NASA’s acquisition of commercial services for future satellite communications needs. Dr. Schemmel received his BS in Physics from the Illinois Institute of Technology, before continuing his education in Europe, where he earned his PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the University of Manchester in England and completed his postdoctorate research at Heriot Watt University in Scotland.
