Dr. Timothy Wood was appointed to his current position on 27 March 2022. He oversees the delivery of a tradecraft-compliant and integrated modernized analytic capability well suited for the big data environments of the future. He orchestrates the transformation of analytic methodologies, workflows, and collaboration enhancements by leveraging data science and decision science as well as analytic tools to hasten the transition from the Modernized Integrated Database to Machine-assisted Analytic Rapid-repository System (MARS).
Born in Maryland, Timothy is a scientist by training, holding a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Grove City College and a doctoral degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). He received his postdoctoral training at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA using advanced techniques to study chemical mechanisms of fluorophore formation in autofluorescent proteins and to identify biological targets for vaccine and drug development.
Dr. Wood most recently served as the Deputy Director of DIA’s National Center for Medical Intelligence (NCMI), Directorate for Analysis (DI) providing leadership and supporting execution of NCMI’s intelligence mission. He also served as the Senior Defense Intelligence Analyst (SDIA) for Cyber supporting USCYBERCOM’s J2 and the Joint Intelligence Operations Center (2021). Timothy’s former assignments include Deputy Chief of the Defense Resources and Infrastructure Integrated Analysis and Methods division (DRI-7, 2018-20), Acting DI Chief Scientist (2017), Deputy Defense Intelligence Integration Officer for Scientific & Technical Intelligence (DIIO/S&TI, 2016-17), DIA Professional Analyst Career Education (PACE) Instructor (ADI-2, 2018) after being an NCMI Branch Chief & analyst (2008-17). He chaired the National Intelligence Council’s Biological Sciences Working Group (2013-16) and deployed to Afghanistan where he worked strategic analysis addressing national governance, the financial crisis, and other issues (2011). He joined DIA in 2008 after working as a supervisor, principal investigator & scientific consultant at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the Research Operations Services Chemistry Laboratory doing medical research and serving on numerous committees. From 2007- 16, Timothy also held an adjunct faculty position at UMBC and served as an advisory board member for their nationally recognized Biotechnology program.
His awards include a National Intelligence Professional Award for Counterproliferation, multiple DIA Director’s Team Awards, the inaugural Defense Intelligence Melissa A. Drisko Collaborative Achievement Award, DIA Civilian Achievement Medal, and DIA Global War on Terror/NATO awards. He earned Joint Duty Assignment credit in 2011.
Dr. Wood currently lives in Maryland where he spends time enjoying family activities to include camping, sports, and practicing tae kwon do.
